Two-way radios come in all shapes and sizes and are available in 3 types of frequency bands: UHF Radios, VHF Radios or Digital Radios - 900MHz ISM. The most important thing to consider is: How to choose the correct two-way radio for your communication applications. First up! Motorola UHF Radios, Motorola VHF Radios or Motorola Digital Radios - 900MHz ISM? This part's important: VHF should only be for when you plan to use your radios exclusively outdoors. Use VHF when you plan to use your walkie-talkies exclusively outdoors. Purchasing VHF walkie-talkies for strictly indoor use would be a big mistake.

If you already have VHF radios, you'll need to get VHF radios for that too. VHF talks to VHF only. That goes for the others, as well. UHF radios talk to UHF radios. 900 MHz talk to 900MHz walkie-talkies only.

VHF radio waves travel about twice as far on open ground, rolling hills and through foliage as UHF & 900MHz ISM waves. However, they're not as good at penetrating structural things like walls, buildings and urban terrain. VHF is the choice for outdoor use.

For strictly indoor use or indoor/outdoor combined use, you should choose either UHF or 900MHz ISM band. It's all about the radio frequency penetration. Indoors, in indoor/outdoor mixed use scenarios and in urban settings; UHF or 900MHz ISM band should be considered Beyond that, you'll want to look at the application situations in which you'll be using your radios most and individual radio model features etc.

Next Question: Business or pleasure?If you plan on using your walkie-talkies for a business application then you'll want to be sure and buy a commercial two-way radio. Commercial grade walkie-talkies are built tough with durability in the design to handle the rigors of heavy duty application and the beating that business use can put on a handheld radio on the job. Business radios increase productivity and efficiency by keeping your staff connected, so they can deliver a rapid response in customer service applications and work together as a stronger team in all other business radio situations.

Family radios don't see the kind of heavy duty action a commercial radio gets, so they're generally made lighter and are priced a bit cheaper. They also operate on frequencies that the FCC had designated for family use. Family radios help friends and family stay connected in all kinds of recreational scenarios: skiing, shopping, hiking, having a good time at the amusement park or just bumming around the neighborhood. Family radios connect the fun! Family radios can also help keep you safe in an emergency. When something stinky hits the fan, you'll be glad your family has a set of family radios around to help coordinate maneuvers in uncertain conditions and keep everyone together.

Note: The choice of VHF or UHF is not something you have to worry about when choosing Family Radios or GMRS Radios since the choice of UHF vs. VHF is not applicable. All Family Radios and GMRS Radios are UHF.
